Cartoon

‘Pepper and Salt’ cartoon by Sauer, Wall Street Journal (2001)

In this cartoon, Sauer satirizes the practice known as ‘brandolatry’, which is discussed on page 137 of THE PURITAN GIFT. In companies affected by the Cult of the (so-called) Expert during ‘The Years that the Locust Ate’ (1971-1995),  improving the image was often thought to be more important than improving the product.
